Importance of Correct Woodworm Identification
The presence of damage caused by wood boring insects does not always indicate a need for remedial treatment. However correct identification of the relevant beetle is essential if the correct chemical and method of application is to be selected.
If ‘green’ or partially dry timber has been incorporated into buildings any insect damage noticed may be historic, as they will usually have been killed during the drying process, therefore no remedial treatment may be necessary.
Adult wood boring insects are normally found only at certain times of the year, however a whole range of insects may be found indoors during the year. It is always best to call upon an experienced timber treatment contractor should you have any doubts.
Of the wood boring beetles Deathwatch Beetles may cause structural damage.
Both solvent based products and those that are water based may be used in the control of wood boring beetles.
Solvents in liquid form are usually sprayed onto the wood. Solvents in paste form are usually applied via brush or trowel.
Water based products involve 1 part concentrate added to 24 parts water making a 25 litre mix, these are usually applied via a sprayer. These sprayers may be hand held applicator types or electric pumps. Many of these chemicals have fungicide as well as insecticidal properties.
Thorough application of the chemical is essential in treating any of the wood boring beetles.
Diy bought products may be useful for treating a small piece of furniture for a relatively short time, but trade chemicals are needed to treat household roofs, floors, etc.
Sometimes discreet drilling of timber may be necessary, usually in oak beams, to facilitate uptake of chemical.
Wood Boring Insects
Powderpost Beetle
- Often found in oak and elm, with large pores and high starch content.
- Not found in softwoods.
- Common in furniture and occasionally in block or strip flooring.
- Tunnels: Circular, 1 – 2 mm diameter, random orientation but mostly parallel to grain.
Deathwatch Beetle
- Often found in historic buildings where large quantities of oak or elm are used structurally.
- Found particularly in areas prone to dampness.
- Damage often extreme in concealed bearing ends of timbers inserted into damp walls.
- Tunnels: Circular, 3 mm diameter. Often extensive, random orientation, mainly in direction of grain.
Common Furniture Beetle
- Frequent in older furniture and all constructional timbers.
- Particularly found around loft access, timbers in contact with solid walls, under stairs, cupboards and other areas affected by damp.
- Tunnels: Circular, 1 – 2mm diameter. Often extensive, random orientation.
Wood Boring Weevil
- Found in decayed softwoods and hardwoods in damp conditions.
- Poorly ventilated ground floors, cellars, and wood in contact with damp solid floors or walls are particularly susceptible.
- Tunnels: Numerous, normally in the direction of the grain. Often break through to wood surface.
Customer Testimonials
Here are some comments from a few of our many satisfied customers.
RH & RW Clutton have used Woodworm Treatments and Richard Cook for a number of years to treat a range of timber framed building across our managed Estates. We have found Richard to be extremely thorough and his work to be of high standard. We would highly recommend Woodworm Treatments.

Richard was exceptional to work with throughout on our very large scale and complex property which is spread out over a wide area.
He was prompt to respond to our initial query and carry out the site visit for quotation without any upfront fees.
He then fitted in dates for carrying out the works efficiently, even slotting phase 2 in at a later date when we had a hold up due to bat survey, he rescheduled phase 2 swiftly so no further delays on the project overall.
Richard turned up as scheduled every time and updated us on his progress daily.
He kept going the extra mile to handle any issues that arose himself during the course of the work, including remedying access to difficult areas and spraying surprise live wasps nests to complete the work without delays or issues for us.
His follow up with issuing the guarantee was also very prompt.
Our experience working with Richard is that his service is excellent and we would highly recommend him to anyone needing his services on a project no matter how large or small.

We have recently used the services of Richard Cook, of Protect Pest Control for the pest and woodworm treatments at our new house.
We found Richard to be polite, friendly, extremely efficient and thorough.
We are pleased to say that the treatment for mice, pests and woodworm has worked, and continues to do so!
The cost for the treatment was very reasonable and we received the necessary certification for the woodworm treatment in a timely manner.
Richard also followed up to check on the bait left for mice, and the pest treatment to the carpets, and was also very accommodating when we asked him to return to carry out more woodworm treatment after building works unearthed the original floorboards and beams in the house.
We would definitely recommend Protect Pest Control for their services.
